“Red and White Angels” are a tribute to my favorite football teams: the Spanish National Team “La Seleccion”, and Real Madrid. The name comes from the transcendent book “White Angels: Beckham, Real Madrid & The New Football”, by John Carlin, where he writes of Beckham’s dream to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2003 for “a football heaven where everybody played football like angels, and everyone wore white.”
My love for football began at the 2002 World Cup, where, of course, I was lured to the game by David Beckham. But when England played poorly in the 2006 World Cup, my eyes were caught by another footballer: a boy god, a kid with freckles and a blond mohawk, a striker with such devastating speed that I remembered it breathlessly as the fastest game I’d ever seen. From there, my love for Fernando Torres was born. But it wasn’t until ESPN decided to broadcast the 2008 Euros that I was introduced to, and fell in love with, the rest of the team: Sergio, Cescito, Dahveed, San Iker, Silva, Xavi, et al . .
For this livejournal, I will be writing game blogs for each La Seleccion and Real Madrid game I watch. My hope is to bring these two teams alive, to tell their story, and to provide English-language coverage of a group of footballers who are on the other side of the world from me, divided by an ocean and a language – but united, by the same fervor for the best football on earth.
